ACTORS’ LAB WITH A DYNAMIC TWIST
“Without wonder and insight, acting is just a trade. With it, it becomes creation.”
Bette Davis
“Acting is nothing more nor less than playing. The idea is to humanize life.”
George Eliot
WELCOME TO STAGING COURT ACTORS’ LAB
DISCIPLINE, COLLABORATION, AND LOVE OF CRAFT DEFINE US, AND OUR CLASSES EMPHASIZE AND NURTURE THE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES TO CREATE CHARACTER FROM EMOTIONAL MEMORY, SCENE STUDY AND IMPROVISATION. OUR IN-CLASS CRITIQUE INSPIRES STUDENTS TO DO THEIR BEST WORK.
OUR FALL SESSIONS BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER 2010. WE WILL HOLD TWO “PRE-LAUNCH WORKSHOPS FOR INTERESTED STUDENTS IN THE SUMMER OF 2010.
WHILE WE HONOR AND PRACTICE TECHNIQUES RANGING FROM STELLA ADLER, UTA HAGEN, SANFORD MEISNER (AND MANY MORE), ABOVE ALL WE CELEBRATE THE CREATIVE IMPULSE THAT DRIVES ACTORS OF ALL LEVELS TO PRACTICE THEIR CRAFT IN A WARM, NURTURING SETTING THAT ALLOWS BOLD DRAMATIC RISKS, CONSISTENT WORK, AND AUDITIONING TECHNIQUES THAT KEEP YOU AT THE TOP OF YOUR CRAFT AS YOU AUDITION AND WORK IN THE INDUSTRY.
OUR FOUNDING DIRECTOR, CHERYL LUBIN, HAS WORKED EXTENSIVELY AT THE HERBERT BERGDOF STUDIO IN NEW YORK AND USED HER DRAMATIC TRAINING, STAGE EXPERIENCE, AND LAW DEGREE TO INSPIRE CLEAR, FOCUSED, AND DYNAMIC EXPRESSION FROM HER STUDENTS HERE AND IN NEW YORK. IMPROVISATIONS FROM REAL AND “REEL” LEGAL DRAMAS ARE A REGULAR PORTION OF EACH CLASS SESSION, AND PRODUCE BREAKTHROUGHS WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE SEARCHING FOR CLEAR INTENTION, SENSE OF PLACE, AND CHARACTER STUDY.

A UNIQUE AND EXCITING ACTORS’ LAB AT COMPLEX HOLLYWOOD
AN ARENA FOR CREATIVE EXPRESSION
IMPROVISATION AND SCENE STUDY OF STUDENTS’ CHOICE WITH A SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON COURTROOM DRAMA AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH CLASS!
At Staging Court, we believe that actors have limitless potential….to enjoy the process and the art of honing their craft while mastering practical techniques for auditions. While our students are free to work on scene study of their choice, our use of courtroom scenarios for improvisation at selected times each month is utterly unique.
Actors are artists who recognize the need to perform on a regular basis, honing their craft as they seek and secure opportunities for paid work. In the courtroom, everyone must be an actor: real, authentic, and utterly in the moment. The stakes are always high.
WHAT ACTORS CAN LEARN FROM PERFORMING COURTROOM SCENES AS PART OF ACTING CLASS IMPROVISATION
Focus, high stakes, and passion all combine to make the most effective trial lawyers. THE SAME PRINCIPLE APPLIES TO MASTERING THE CRAFT OF ACTING.
Our Actors’ Lab Sessions always include:
1) improvisation of courtroom scenes from such works as Inherit the Wind and Law and Order, followed by extensive, constructive, and nurturing critique and feedback
2) scene study (students’ choice of selections)
3) audition techniques in presenting yourself before, during, and after the cold reading or callback
4) Techniques, tips, strategies, and best practices from trial advocacy help you become more focused, relaxed, and powerful as a performer!
